The Career Architect Programme has been run at MedImmune (part of Astra Zeneca) for the last 9 years.  It is one of the employee induction programmes and all new starters attend this programme for new managers so that they can then support the career and development of their direct reports.  We have trained over 800 employees and 250 managers.

The materials used are based on the Korn Ferry Leadership Architect and participants are given tools, template and a copy of the FYI Development Book during the workshop.  Further materials are made available before and after the workshop on the internal portal.  Participants are asked as part of their pre-work to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses and complete a quick questionnaire using the leadership competencies.

The workshop is highly interactive, with the group working on case studies, a fast quiz, using cards to self assess and to create their own role profile.  The participants work in pairs to consider appropriate development actions and then share ideas as part of a case study on what excellent development plans look like, with high quality actions.

There is a big emphasis on managers as coaches on the managers’ programme, so we give the participants as many opportunities as possible to practice their coaching skills.  They practice assessing their direct reports, giving feedback and discussing development actions, as well as identifying a range of possible development experiences in a case study.  This helps them enormously with embedding the learning back in the workplace.
